Help — Get Lights on earlier at Ephesus

By September 14, 2019 Announcements

Folks,

We need your help. Park and Recreation as part of standardizing their operations, decided to change when we can turn on the Ephesus lights. Previously we had negotiated with them, that the lights could be turned on 1 and 1/2 hours before sunset. This was because people were concerned about seeing the ball for proper play. Especially on overcast days, not being able to turn it on early caused issues. We also noted that players do not usually turn the lights on unless needed (not wasting energy).

After our courts were resurfaced, P&R changed it to 30 minutes before sunset. This is in line with their other facilities. However, we feel that pickleball is different from other sports. (see earlier email below). P&R has turned down our initial request to have it returned to 90 minutes prior to sunset. But they have indicated that if they receive a sufficient number of concerns/complaints from Pickleball Players, they will look at extending the time (back to 90 minutes, or maybe 60 minutes).

So… we ask that if you feel like when you’re playing, that it’s difficult to see the ball because we can’t turn the lights on early enough, please email Robb English (renglish@townofchapelhill.org), and cc me (bmh@ils.unc.edu) so I’ll have a record in case of follow-up.

I suggest describing that it makes play difficult, or less enjoyable. And especially emphasize the safety issue (you can be hit by balls you can barely make out that are hit from 14′ away at 40mph arriving in 1/4 second, i.e. the opposing kitchen line).

Best is to use your own words. Your email doesn’t have to be long. Every email helps!!
