Food for the Summer Volunteer Signup

By June 17, 2017 Announcements

Hello fellow pickleball players,

During the pickleball courts first anniversary celebration, Chapel Hill’s mayor, Pam Hemminger, told us about “Food for the Summer,” a program that distributes food to children who, during the school year, would receive free or reduced lunches. It’s more than food, but also a time for socializing and to participate in some fun activities with the children.

Signups are by the day and require about an hour and a half commitment per day. Volunteers are needed daily, M-F, in June, July and August, so there are lots of opportunities to help.

If you would, please take a minute to read the email below and follow the link to sign up and volunteer. It’s a very worthwhile project and a way of giving back to the city for providing us with the opportunity to play pickleball at Ephesus Park.

Best,
Joanne

Hello Chapel Hill Pickleball Group!

I hear that you all are looking to volunteer! Thanks so much with getting in touch with Food for the Summer, we really appreciate your interest in volunteering with the program. Last year we served over 48,000 meals to children who normally rely on Free or Reduced lunch during the academic school year, and we would love your help trying to grow this number even more this summer!

My name is Emma Jenkins-Sullivan and I am the Program Coordinator for Food for the Summer Program, Summer 2017. As you may already know, we have a website that you can visit us at http://www.foodforthesummer.org but we also have a very convenient webpage where you can sign up to choose locations and times to volunteer! The link is here: http://signup.com/go/uDaNDVk

Also, we were not able to post a full description about the two different volunteer positions this summer on the signup.com volunteer webpage due to space limitations, so at the bottom of this email I have cut and paste that information for your reference as well. Please also know that it can be found online at our main website (foodforthesummer.org). If you have any questions about signing up or any feedback that you would like to give to the program, don’t hesitate to contact me via email at this email address, or any of my contact information list down below. We hope that you have a chance to come out this summer, get to know some kids living in your community, and have a chance to feed them lunch!

Thank you so much again in your interest, this program could not run without volunteers like yourselves!

Cheers,

Emma

How does Food for the Summer work?

Meals are prepared by Chapel Hill Carrboro City School (CHCCS) workers and delivered by volunteers to meal sites throughout town.

Volunteers also distribute “Fun Buckets” filled with frisbees, jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, and other games and toys to provide the children with fun outdoor activities after their meals are finished.

Meals are picked up from the school cafeteria at 11:30 a.m. Meal time runs from 12:00 – 1:00 summer weekdays

What do volunteers do?

Each site has at least two volunteers.

This year we have two types of volunteer positions available:

· Site Lead

· Site Volunteer

Site Volunteers are asked to:

· Distribute lunch to the children

· Engage with the children during lunch and playtime

· Help with clean up

(Of course, parents are welcome to bring their own school-aged children to the site as well.)

What does a “Site Lead” do?

The Site Lead position, which is new to Food For the Summer this year, is designed to help us comply with state and federal guidelines. Site Leads will be asked to take on more of a leadership role, leading meal distribution, the recording of number of meals distributed, site clean up, and general site supervision.

Individuals interested in this position must be over 16 years of age and will be asked to participate in a one hour orientation session. They also must complete a background check, which can be done quickly and securely with a link that we will email to you!

Ideally, Site Leads will have a driver’s license and access to a car. We are also hoping that they will be able to commit to at least 1 week of volunteering, though we are enthusiastic about any time commitment you can make!
